In the past august I had the big pleasure to play a whole set of Queen music with my band. While practicing and playing the live shows I realised again how great this music is. I've always been a Queen fan - one of my first records I ever bought was "A Day At The Races" in the seventies when I was 12 years old. Although I was highly devoted to the music of Queen I never really had the chance to play the music by myself and therefore I was really excited about performing this special show with my band.
Todays Bassline is said to be mainly composed by Freddie Mercury, because Roger Taylor wrote the song for the "Highlander" movie and Freddie rearranged the tune for the Queen album of the same name.

Today is Greg Lake's 68th Birthday and therefore I want to show you the bassline to one of my favorite Greg Lake compositions: "From The Beginning". It was released in 1972 on ELP's third studio album 'Trilogy'.
In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazin from 2013 Lake said about this song:
"I've always seen that as a special song. I don't know where it came from. I
just felt an inspiration to do it, and it flowed through me in a natural way.
My hands fell upon these very unusual chords. It's a very simple song, but the
chords are very unusual. It was kind of a gift."

Ich habe es ja schon in der ein oder anderen Plattform angekündigt: ich arbeite zur Zeit an einem Video-Basskurs!
Ich unterrichte jetzt schon seit über 25 Jahren und habe in dieser Zeit bereits hunderte von Schülern zu "bässerem" Bass-Spiel verholfen. Viele von Euch kennen und schätzen meine Lehrbücher und Apps, einige haben auch schon einen meiner vielen Bassworkshops besucht und eine treue Gemeinde begleitet mich auch regelmäßig hier auf diesem Bassblog. Danke erstmal dafür! Ich freue mich sehr, dass meine Arbeit so gut ankommt und wertgeschätzt wird.
Nun, da ich gerne neue Herausforderungen suche, habe ich mich nun entschieden auch noch einen Videokurs zu gestalten. Ich denke, dass dies eine optimale Ergänzung zu meinen Büchern darstellt und obwohl es nicht den persönlichen Unterricht bei mir ersetzen kann, so ist es doch viel näher dran als nur die Lehrbücher allein. Und vor allen Dingen möchte ich den Kurs interaktiv gestalten, indem ich Euch immer wieder auffordern werde, mir Eure Fragen, Anregungen oder auch Kritikpunkte mitzuteilen und ich werde versuchen in einem der nächsten Videos auf diese Punkte einzugehen. Ich plane zur Zeit wöchentlich ein neues Video hochzuladen, so dass man - wie im regulären Bassunterricht - regelmäßig neuen Input bekommt.
Die ersten Videos werde ich kostenfrei anbieten, damit ihr mal einen Eindruck bekommt, was ihr da so zu erwarten habt. Anschließend wird es die Möglichkeit geben einzelne VIDEO-Lessons mit allen zugehörigen Unterlagen und eventuellen PlayAlongs zu erwerben oder auch komplette Kurse im Paket zu bestellen. Genauere Infos dazu in den nächsten Wochen.
Heute präsentiere ich Euch eine Art Einführungsvideo zum Thema Übungsplan: also wie übt man richtig und effizient, damit man mit möglichst wenig Zeitaufwand möglichst große Fortschritte macht.
Dieser Übungsplan stellt die Grundlage für den Aufbau des Videokurses da und in den nächsten Wochen präsentiere ich Euch die entsprechenden Übungen zu den einzelnen besprochenen Themengebieten.

It's in fact the first tune I ever heard from ZZ TOP.
1979 they made their first ever European appearance in a german Live-TV-Show called "Rockpalast".
The first song they played was "Thank you" and I was captivated right from the first second. Much later I discovered that this song is not an original ZZ TOP tune but a very nice cover version of a Sam & Dave song from 1968.
This weeks basslines falls in the category of "almost forgotten but yet rediscovered".
I'm the kind of guy who needs loud music for cleaning up my flat. So when it is my turn again the first thing I do is picking a record from my collection to be my "Cleaning soundtrack".
Lately I took the debut album from Eddie Money, which I haven't heard for about decades and believe me I really had a good time cleaning up. Starting with this weeks song "Two Tickets To Paradise" the whole album really kicks ass, including the hymn of my teenage dreams "Wanna Be A Rock'n'Roll Star" (yeah I almost made it ;-) and the wonderful ballad "Save a little room in your heart for me" and the lead single "Baby hold on". No wonder this album gained triple platinum status.
"Two Tickets To Paradise" only comprises three chords: G, A and D. At first glance this suggests to be the key of D major with G being the IV and A the V chord. But the album version of the song (which has no fade out) ends on A, so that we have to consider A to be the key center of the song. When we do so, we have G as bVII and D as IV. This is called the "mixolydian mode", which is really just the notes of the D major scale beginning on the fifth, A.

You might not know the band, but it's really likely that you've heard their biggest hit "The Way To Your Heart" before. 1988 this Song with it's vintage Motown sound was a major international success for the band from Belgium hittin' the charts even in the US.
I neither had heard of them before, when I first saw them live in the early 90ies.
The were opening up for ???? (I just can't remember).But they blew me away and the next day I went straight to the record store and bought the two albums "Heat" and "Simple Rule". "Through Before We Started" was the first song on "Heat".
I would've almost forgotten about the band, if not one of my students recently requested a transcription to a nice "bass and voice"-version of the tune performed by them live in 2011:
